Amit Singhal who was known as the ‘creator’ of Google’s ranking algorithm has joined wearable startup Goqii. Singhal, a top grade executive at Google, had quit the search engine giant in February this year and had expressed his desire to do something new post retirement.
He joined the board of Goqii.
Goquii, a werable startup based out of California is founded by Vishal Gondal. The company develops its own fitness tracking device like other firms in the same space like Apple, Jawbone or Fitbit, but the Gondal founded firm has a different business proposition. It doesn’t just sell the fitness band, rather it offers services that can be worked around the data collected from the tracker.
Goquii has ‘coaches’ or ‘teachers’ who advises and suggests the users about various physical activities bassis the data generated from the users’ fitness band. The company even offers the fitness band for free but generates revenue from the ‘services’ it offers to the customers. The service offered by the coaches or teachers can also be used by users of other fitness bands like that of Apple, Jawbone, Motorola and Fitbit.
A slew of investors have put their money in Goqii. The long list includes names like Chinese internet company Cheetah Mobiles, New Enterprise Associates, DSG Consumer Associates, Neeraj Arora of WhatsApp, Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit’s husband Dr Shriram Nene and Flextronics CEO Mike McNamara.
